USB Floppy Drive

A floppy disk is a data storage medium that is composed of a disk of thin, flexible ("floppy") magnetic storage medium encased in a square or rectangular plastic shell. Originally announced as the "Type 1 Diskette" by IBM in 1973, the industry then adopted the terms "floppy disk" or "floppy".

Floppy disks are read and written by a floppy disk drive or FDD, the initials of which should not be confused with "fixed disk drive", which is another term for a (nonremovable) type of hard disk drive. Invented by the American information technology company IBM, floppy disks in 8 inch, 5¼ inch and 3½ inch forms enjoyed nearly three decades as a popular and ubiquitous form of data storage and exchange, from the mid-1970s to the late 1990s. While floppy disk drives still have some limited uses, especially with legacy industrial computer equipment, they have now been superseded by USB flash drives, external hard disk drives, CDs, DVDs, and memory cards.

If you have an old floppy drive that you would like to use through your universal serial bus (USB) ports on your computer, you will need an appropriate adapter cable. These cables enable Serial ATA (SATA) or integrated drive electronics (IDE) devices to be accessed through USB ports. They can be obtained from many electronic components supply stores. An old floppy drive is likely to be an IDE device, so be sure the cable you purchase has an IDE adapter. Once you acquire the adapter, using your floppy drive through a USB port is a cinch.

Floppy sizes are almost universally referred to in imperial measurements, even in countries where metric is the standard, and even when the size is in fact defined in metric (for instance the 3½-inch floppy, which is actually 90 mm). Formatted capacities are generally set in terms of Kilobytes (1024 bytes, as 1 sector is generally 512 bytes), written as "KB".

A USB floppy disk drive can be disconnected from the computer when not needed. It also can be shared with other computers in your home or office. Many laptop manufacturers have proprietary floppy disk drives available as an accessory to the laptop. These floppy disk drives can cost twice the amount of a USB floppy disk drive. A USB model can be used on any computer that has a USB port, making the proprietary version unnecessary. A USB floppy drive is a one-time purchase. It can be used for the computer you have today as well as any computer you purchase in the future.

If you want to buy Great and Awesome computer this year then it has to be the

Apple MacBook Pro MC374LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop
Where can I find an ultra ata/100 to usb converter (47 pins)?

I have a 2.5" HDD with 47 pins (2 rows that would be a total of 50 pins except for a gap). It came from a laptop. I cannot find a parallel ata (if this is what it is) adapter to usb to plug into my current computer to do some data recovery. All the adapters I find are for 44 pins at most .

I have a SATA or IDE 3in1 to USB converter adapter, but that doesn't fit, obviously. Any suggestions?

You're doing it wrong. Those 4 additional pins are jumpers for master/slave. They have nothing to do with data. That adapter DOES fit if you eschew the separate 4 pins, which are not necessary in the slightest for this.

COM Express Module operates from -40 to 85°C. (Thomasnet)

Equipped with Intel Atom N455 CPU, ICH8M chipset, and Intel GMA 3150 graphics
engine, Model COM-746E offers 2 GB DDR3 soldered memory, 3 SATA ports, and 1
ATA port supporting 2 IDE devices. Through carrier board, module can connect
with other I/O interfaces such as COM ports, USB ports, PCIe, PCI, and LPC.
Fanless, Type 2 form factor module supports VGA, 18-bit LVDS, and dual
independent displays, making it suitable for bank systems and multimedia
displays such as digital signage and kiosks.
