Cable Extension USB: What is It Employed for?
When you have to connect the computer with a USB device such as a scanner or a printer, you will need a cable extension USB for the installation. According to the usage instructions, the USB technology is compatible with the so-called passive extension cables, containing an active repeater chip.
16 feet is the maximum optimal distance for the USB extension, anything beyond this, may result in data loss and damage to the USB equipment. A possibility to make the distance longer is to connect several cable extension USB devices but not more than 80 feet, which would be approximately four regular cables bound together.
Basically, the entire installation process consist of connecting the cable extension. USB ports on notebooks and desktops pose no compatibility problems with various USB devices. If you want high quality transfer rates of up to 480 Mb per second, you should use double-shielded cable extension USB cords.
Most cables work with with Macs and PCs alike and the compliance applies to any high-speed USB, whether it is 1.0, 1.1, or 2.0. The reliability of USB cables results from the existence of incorporated or built-in electronics that make good performance possible even at long or peripheral distances.
The cable extension USB connectors are different, there is one type A male and one type A female, each for a distinct part of the cable. The A female connects to the computer port while the A male connects to the next cable, if you need further extension with the printer or scanner devices. The truth is that as a replacement to serial devices, the USB cable connection is a lot easier and more reliable.
And the usage is omni-present if we think that the USB technology stays at the basis of every modern electronic device. Modern computer and notebook versions no longer incorporate serial ports, and neither mouses nor keyboards have serial connectors.
The need for a cable extension USB cord is not exactly common occurrence. Most PC owners work well to the regular cable length and do not have to look for extensions. Market statistics indicate that Mac users, who have a lower number of USB ports are usually the first to seek USB connectors to match their electronic devices. Cable extension USB cords will usually function for connecting office electronics, which makes them necessary for networks, multiple office usage and lots of situations when the distance between one appliance and another is larger than 16 feet.

Is a USB desktop network adapter better than a PCI network card?
I am deciding whether or not to get a USB network adapter (Linksys) or a PCI network card (linksys)
this is for my other desktop computer
which one is better for speed, range, reliability, etc.?
PCI is normally better if you have a choice, it performs more of the 'processing' on the card itself as opposed to in the driver (software) I assume this is a wireless adapter you are talking about, look for one with a detachable/movable antennae so you can locate it up high for a better signal.
Genius launches FaceCam 3000 with headset (Slash Gear)
We can be honest in that webcams are really rather boring. They all do pretty
much the same thing. This new webcam from Genius is interesting though because
it comes with a little singe ear headset. The headset looks like a Bluetooth
headset that you would use for your smartphone. The headset will let those
