I've never tried it with the usb-ethernet adapter, but I can't see why it would be different than something that was ethernet on both ends. the cable is hot-swappable the only "danger" I can think of would be any data that was streaming at the time of the disconnect would be lost. you almost certainly would need to have the cable plugged into the wii before you try to access the network though
