Components of wireless LAN architecture
The term architecture is used to define the design of any wired or wireless communication network. In terms of wired networks, it talks about the various hardware used that form part of the network. In a similar way, wireless LAN architecture is also about the components used to form the network itself. Here is a look at the various components that make a complete wireless LAN architecture:
The user
Obviously, this would mean the person who uses the services of the wireless LAN. However, the user in the wireless LAN architecture is more importantly the device used for connectivity. This may include a laptop, a palmtop, a desktop PC or even a video game console. These devices tend to be used for wi-fi access while on the move. In fact, mobility is one of the most important reasons for the success of wireless LAN. These networks can also be used by stationary devices, like desktop PCs in offices or corporate conference rooms. Even laptops that access data in these buildings are usually switched off at the end of the day, which means that mobility is not always the reason why individuals or even businesses prefer wireless LAN.
The network interface card
The next part of wireless LAN architecture is the network interface card or NIC. A wireless interface card or wireless adapter works like the interface between the device and the network itself. It is a part of the device, but it may be internally or externally fitted. The NIC card will work under a certain IEEE standard- 802.11a, b, g or n. The adapter itself is available in many forms, with one being the Peripheral Component Interconnect or the PCI bus. The most popular form of wireless LAN architecture adapters is the PC card found in PDAs and in laptops. The mini PCI card, which is a smaller and lighter version of the PCI card, is integrated in the more modern laptops, and also in other wireless networking devices.
Base stations
The next part of a wireless LAN architecture is the base station, which acts as the interface between the various data signals transmitted through radio waves. One example of a base station is an access point from where devices can access the wi-fi network. As a person continues to move across different access points, the device automatically detects the next powerful access point and moves forward. Other, more complex forms of base stations, is the router, which is typical in a place where data transfer occurs between multiple computers. A base station may support and provide connectivity for either one point to another point or to several points.
The access controller
The next and final part of the wireless LAN architecture is crucial to the security of the network. Access controllers typically form a part of the wired section of a wireless network. It provides control and information on the base stations in a wireless networks. This controller may either be a part of the access point itself, or it may be the central controller.

If you're looking to craft a small form factor HTPC to an equally small
budget, then VIA's own-brand internals deserve some serious consideration. The
company's 1.4GHz dual-core Nano X2 CPU was recently put to good effect in
Zotac's ZBOX Nano VD01 and is now available as part of a DIY combo called the
VE-900, which puts the processor on a compact mini-ITX motherboard alongside a
VX900 dedicated media accelerator for smooth video handling up to 1080p. The
board has a single PCI slot, room for up to 8GB of DDR3, two SATA pin headers
and four USB 2.0 ports. The rear panel adds to this with HDMI and VGA video
outs, three analog audio jacks, Gigabit LAN, four more USB 2.0 ports and other
standard fare -- but alas, it seems that the $89 price tag won't fetch you
