keeping harddrive in external enclosure extends life longer than keeping it run 24/7 in PC?
I have data harddrive for movies which I only access during weekends. Now. I have question. keeping hard drive in computer which runs 24/7 and keeping harddrive in external enclosure which will powered only during weekends. Which method will keep harddrive life longer? I had bad experience with harddrives. most of my both IDE and SATA harddrive corrupted in less than 2 years, but I don't want to lose my datas. I'm not rich enough to set up raid 1 or 5. Now for the longer life question, I think keeping in external enclosure will last longer coz, it's going to be unused most of the times. I thought of this because now external harddrives are as fast as keeping them inside of the computer due to esata. If I do more research and sure that doing this increase harddrive life. I'll buy 2 750gb sata harddrives for 300$ and 2 external enclosure with esata for 50$ to keep important data.
In theory, the hard drive in the external enclosure will last longer than the one inside the computer due to temperature differences. It's more usually the inside of the computer is hotter due to the other devices producing heat such as video cards and processors.
Also, again in theory, unused hardware will last longer than a hardware used 24/7. Basically because it wasn't being used.
However, multiple other stuff can affect the end result, just as maintainance or removal of dust particles that could accumulate, accidents and sometimes, even luck. You may buy a internal hard drive that will last you years and you may also get an external drive that will conk out in months.
So in the end, I suggest having BOTH because well, neither of the two ideas are foolproof.
