What is a hot swap drive in server?
Ok i know what hot swap is, removing, or replacing, a drive without powering down. But if you say you have a hot swap drive in a server then this is likely to be a ide, sata, scsi standard drive used for backup, what is the purpose of it, and how do they work?
Could the hot swap be the system drive?
Hi joe
well how would you swap a drive that failed without pulling it out and replacing it with another.
you should have at least two hot swap drives and you should always have two spare ready to swap should the system go down..
usually its in a raid configuration anything from mirroring to parity to one drive for each bit of data in a data word. which in the case of a 32bit processor is usually 32 drives and one extra for parity checking.
it can be costly and you should have a tech on hand 24/7 365 days a year should there be a failure.
SCSI 3 is still the best option for a 32bit system. nothing else comes near a SCSI allows 63 devices on this system.
36GB Gen 3 Hot-swap 3.5IN.
