Is it worth upgrading an old PowerMac G5?
I got a PowerMac for free from a friend.
The current specs are:
400MHz G4 Processor
256 MB SDRAM
16MB ATI Rage Graphics
Mac OS 9
ZIP and DVD-RAM Drive
I am thinking of putting $496.82 into it:
Hitachi 512MB SDRAM - $26.96 (x4) = $107.84
MAXPower 1.6GHz Processor - $169.00
EVGA nVIdia GeForce 6200 512MB - $52.02
Sonnet Tempo SATA PCI Card - $72.99
Western Digital 500GB SATA HDD - $46.99
LG Super-Multi Drive - $32.99
Mac OS X Leopard - $14.99
I have checked all of these products and they are all compatible. I just want to know if it is worth it.
Thanks,
Sam
I would like a personal opinion. Just tell me what you think.
I just realized. It is a G4.

Why in the HELL would you dump nearly $500 into a ten year old computer??? That's easily ten times what it's worth! You could buy a used Mac that would easily destroy that upgraded G4 for half the price! For $500 you could get a decent used iMac, Mac Mini, Macbook, hell, just about any Intel Mac that would be leagues beyond it in performance. Even if you did upgrade it, you're still stuck at Leopard, you're still stuck using PC100 RAM and old 2/4x AGP cards, and you still won't be able to run most modern software. What the hell is the point? Honestly, what possessed you to think this was a good idea?
And no, the Geforce 6200 is not compatible unless you plan on flashing it with a Mac ROM.
